With the extremely light Vision 14, Schenker has been offering a modern and high-performance 14-inch ultrabook since last year, but the quad-core Tiger Lake processor limited the system’s potential somewhat. Additionally, the gorgeous 3K panel (16:10, matte) consumes a lot of power, which combined with the small 53Wh battery resulted in poor battery life. At the beginning of 2022, a model with the GeForce RTX 3050 Ti dedicated GPU was launched to significantly improve graphics performance.
With the latest Vision 14, Schenker has updated the device once again and extensively with a massive 99 Wh battery now being an option. Although this slightly increases the overall weight and requires a thicker case of about 1 mm (~0.04 in), run times are nearly twice as long. With Intel’s new Alder Lake-H generation Core i7-12700H, processor performance has also been significantly improved. It runs at 40-60 watts and offers an incredible increase in processing capabilities, while being the best Intel option for this TDP line. Thanks to liquid metal cooling and dual built-in fans, emissions also stay reasonably low and while the Vision 14 can run very loud and hot while gaming, it at least manages the heat in some way. In return, it is a compact laptop with an extreme level of performance and a very low weight of only 1.3 kg (~ 2.87 lb) or 1.1 kg (~ 2.43 lb), if you don’t need the bigger battery.
The Vision 14 is an overall well-rounded system that stands out for its good build quality, good connectivity, including a full-size card reader and good input devices. We would be remiss not to mention the good maintenance options, as it is rare to find models with upgradable RAM slots in this class of devices. There are drawbacks in the form of a hinge that does not always prevent tilting when adjusting the angle and quite poor speakers. Additionally, the Vision 14’s antenna configuration does not support modern 6 GHz Wi-Fi networks (Wi-Fi 6E).
However, since the pros far outweigh the cons, the Vision 14 should be considered when buying a compact and capable laptop. As usual, more information on the laptop, including part numbers and measurements, can be found in our in-depth review. Additionally, we’re also excited about the recently announced Vision 16 Pro, which transfers the Vision 14 concept to the larger 16-inch form factor.
I grew up with modern consumer electronics and my first computer was a Commodore C64, which encouraged my interest in building my own systems. I started working as a reviewer for Notebookcheck during my work-study studies at Siemens. Currently, I’m primarily responsible for managing business laptops and mobile workstations. It’s a great experience to be able to review the latest devices and technologies and then compare them to each other.
Even in my youth, I was already very enthusiastic about technology and, therefore, I started building PCs, optimizing them and writing programs while I was still in school. Faced with the inevitable hardware and software problems associated with computers, I was always relentless in my search for the necessary solutions. The compact forms of laptops and smartphones have introduced further challenges in this regard. In my reviews for Notebookcheck, I try to communicate as objectively as possible how well a device copes with these obstacles.
